I have always believed that faith and reason are compatible concepts rather than mutually exclusive, and that the things that might make them appear to be incompatible are simply obstacles to overcome.  For instance, there are many apparent contradictions in the Bible.  While most can be easily explained, there are some that remain problematic. The rationalist says that it isn’t reasonable to believe in the Bible since it contains these contradictions, and yet we accept contradictory viewpoints all the time as a normal result of genuine accounts of what occurred.  Police detectives will tell you that when they pull two suspects aside and question them separately they expect to hear a few details that don’t match.  If the stories are identical in every way they assume that they are contrived.

Another example would be the very existence of God.  The rationalist says that it’s irrational to believe in something that you can’t see, touch, taste, hear, or smell.  In other words why should you believe in something that you can’t detect with your physical senses?  And yet we take precautions all the time to avoid radiation, toxic gasses, and diseases that we can’t detect with our senses.  We do so because we know the consequences if we don’t.

The same is true regarding faith.  We can see the consequences of violating God’s moral laws.  Committing a crime can land you in prison.  Drunkenness can cause you problems with your career, your family, or even your health if it causes an accident or leads to cirrhosis.  Lying can alienate people and damage your credibility.  Sexual immorality can lead to STDs, premarital pregnancy (children born to a one parent home are far more likely to be poor), social problems … etc.  At the same time abiding by God’s moral laws provides you with increased likelihood of enjoying stability, health (on average, people who attend church regularly live 2-3 years longer than people who don’t), and prosperity (on average, regular churchgoers earn 9% more).  The effects of faith in God can be gauged even if He can’t be detected with the senses.

“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8)

Jesus compared God to the wind.  You can’t see the wind.  It’s just moving air, and air is invisible.  You can’t see the wind but you can see the effects of wind.  Trees sway.  Leaves fly.  Clouds move.  Flags wave.  The effects are obvious, even if you can’t see the wind itself.

That’s how it is with God.  We see His creation.  We see the changed lives when people decide to follow Jesus and live according to His Word.  The effects of God’s power and His Kingdom are obvious, even if He isn’t visible Himself.

No subject is more contested in the faith arena of course, than the issue of creation vs. evolution.  Evolutionists often portray creationists as irrational, bible-thumping backwoods hicks who don’t appreciate science while creationists often portray evolutionists as atheists with an agenda.  In reality many creationists are quite educated and appreciate science (some even work as scientists) while many evolutionists believe in God and some even attend church regularly.

But there are many other faith issues that are very controversial, especially for Charismatics like me.  Tongues, healing, prosperity, eternal security, sovereignty, inerrancy, tithing, lordship salvation, baptism, communion, the Sabbath … etc. all provide apologists with plenty of material to cover, and all require considerable research and detailed analysis.

I have made it my goal to address these and similar issues without allowing my emotions and passions to interfere with the presentation, and to encourage others to engage in civil discourse as the Bible commands.

“Apologetics” comes from the Greek word apologia, which is translated “answer” in I Peter 3:5

“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” (I Pet. 3:15 NIV)

Peter is admonishing us to prepare ourselves intellectually, and not merely spiritually.  That means that we have to study and know our material.  Paul also makes the case for the intellectual presentation of the Faith.

“just as it is right for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of grace.” (Phil. 1:7)

Additionally, he describes to the church at Corinth the act of defending the faith.

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.  The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (II Cor. 10:3-5 NIV)

Paul was known to cast out demons, raise the dead, heal the sick, and shake off a deadly snake during his ministry.  If anybody could rely on the supernatural power of God to effectively communicate the gospel it was Paul, and yet he also saw the need for the power of persuasion through a well thought-out presentation as well.  You can see that by how he reasoned from the scriptures in the synagogues (Acts 17:2) and discussed his views with the Greeks at Mars Hill in Athens (Acts 17:16-31).

Jude also tells us to oppose false doctrine in his brief epistle.

 Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.” (Jude 3 NKJV)

To “contend” for something means that you fight for it, although as Paul pointed out we don’t resort to physical confrontation.  We battle spiritually and intellectually.  Jude was talking about people who have distorted the biblical teaching of grace, presenting it as a license to sin rather than as a manifestation of God’s mercy to fallen humanity.  But grace isn’t the only doctrine that has encountered such twisting.  There are many other teachings, and many ways that each one is twisted.  That’s why we have to study and prepare.

Today’s world is becoming more secularized all the time.  People are constantly bombarded with anti-Christian rhetoric from the worlds of education, entertainment, science, politics, religion … you name it.  Eventually it has an effect.  They need to know that most of that comes from prejudice against Christ and Christianity rather than factual information.  They need reliable resources to counter all of the garbage that is dumped on them by the world on a daily basis.

At the same time many within the church are attacking their Charismatic brothers and sisters over non-essential issues.  We need to know how to respond.  That’s why I do what I do.  Hopefully by providing good information and provoking thought I will be able to counter the negativity and inspire and prepare people to go out there and do battle in the intellectual arena.

Main Arguments

When I go about presenting my defense for my positions, I try to follow the biblical model.  When Jesus and the Apostle Paul were challenged on their statements or actions, they responded in several ways.

  • Scripture – For the believer there is no greater authority than that of the Bible.  Therefore the primary way to support your position with other Christians is to provide proof texts (verses that prove your viewpoint).  This requires familiarity with the principles of hermeneutics (the study of interpretation).  For example, always consider the context of the verses and take into consideration what the Greek and Hebrew scholars have to say regarding the original texts.  For the unbeliever the Bible may not carry much weight if they don’t believe in it, so depending on the situation you may need to use another approach.
  • Pointing out Hypocrisy – Jesus did this on more than one occasion.  Nothing puts an opponent on the defensive more than pointing out their own hypocrisy.  Boxers know that your opponent can’t hurt you as long as you’re punching and they’re covering up.  In Luke 14:5 Jesus pointed out that the Pharisees would violate the rules for the Sabbath in order to rescue an animal, so why would they object to healing somebody on the Sabbath?
  • Pointing Out Moral Failures – This is what Jesus did when He said “let he who is without sin cast the first stone”. (John 8:7)  This is a dicey one, however.  You shouldn’t just hurl out accusations and point out moral failure without cause.  The only time it’s acceptable in apologetics is when the other person has started down this road by making an accusation in an area where they also have shortcomings.  For example, one well known apologist has made accusations of plagiarism against Kenneth Hagin while he has had the same accusation made against him.  The old saying that “people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones” applies here.
  • Pointing out Logical Flaws – Jesus did this regarding the flawed theology of the Scribes in Mark 12:35-37, and with the Sadducees in Mark 12:18-27.  When an apologist says that physical healing isn’t the context of Isaiah 53:5, you can direct them to Matthew 8:16,17 where the context of Isaiah’s passage is clearly shown to be physical healing.  If they then insist that although the context might be physical healing, it was fulfilled in Jesus’ day and it doesn’t apply to us today you can direct them to Matthew 12:17-21 which quotes Isaiah about the Gentiles trusting in Jesus.  If physical healing doesn’t apply to us today then Gentiles trusting in Jesus doesn’t apply either.  You can’t have it both ways!
  • Quoting from Their Own – Jesus did this when the Pharisees accused Him of blasphemy because He claimed to be God (John 10:34).  Likewise the Apostle Paul quoted from the Greek poet when he addressed the Greeks on Mars Hill. (Acts 17:28)  This is especially effective when you’re dealing with people who don’t accept the validity of the Bible.  Quoting from respected people in the worlds of science, government, philosophy, education … etc. shows them that their argument is with those people and not with you.  For example, many renowned secular figures have compared DNA to computer code.  Since we all know that software coding is never the result of random processes but is always the product of an intelligent being, it would be logical to conclude that the genetic coding of DNA is also the product of an intelligent being.
  • Exploiting Their Fears – This is what Jesus did when He was questioned about the authority by which He was teaching. (Mat. 21:23-27)  The chief priests were put on the spot when He asked them about John the Baptist.  Similar to the last point, when somebody calls it heresy to say that Jesus died spiritually I just point out that Billy Graham and R. C. Sproul have also said that Jesus experienced spiritual death on the cross.  None of them want to call those men heretics, so if they call Word of Faith people heretics when they aren’t willing to do so with the others, it’s an obvious double standard.

In short, the two best weapons when engaging the opposition in theological matters are the Bible (when addressing believers) and the weaknesses of the viewpoint and/or argument of the opposition (which applies to both believers and unbelievers).
